Pregnancy Supplements.

Most supplements are optional. A few are critical. The goal isn’t more pills—it’s targeted support based on physiology, labs, and symptoms.

The Core Supplements With the Strongest Evidence

1. Prenatal Vitamin (non-negotiable) A prenatal should fill gaps, not megadose. Key components include: • Folate (preferably methylated for those with absorption issues) • Iron (dose individualized—too much can worsen nausea and constipation) • Iodine (often missing, critical for fetal thyroid development) • Vitamin B12 and zinc More isn’t better. Over-supplementation can create imbalance and side effects. 2. DHA (Omega-3 fatty acids) DHA supports fetal brain, eye, and nervous system development and may reduce preterm birth risk. Many prenatal vitamins underdose DHA or exclude it entirely. • Typical goal: 200–300 mg/day • Especially important if fish intake is low Food sources help—but supplementation ensures consistency.

Supportive Add-Ons (When Indicated)

3. Vitamin D Deficiency is common, especially in winter or limited sun exposure. Vitamin D supports immune health, bone metabolism, and may play a role in preeclampsia risk reduction. • Dosing should be guided by labs when possible 4. Choline Critical for fetal brain development and placental function. Many prenatals lack adequate choline. • Eggs are the best dietary source • Supplementation may be useful if intake is low 5. Magnesium Supports muscle relaxation, sleep quality, constipation, headaches, and leg cramps—frequent pregnancy complaints. • Form matters (glycinate or citrate are often better tolerated) A note on herbal supplements: “Natural” does not equal safe. Many herbs lack pregnancy safety data or interact with medications. Always evaluate individually. Key principle: supplements should support food and physiology—not replace nutrition, prenatal care, or lab-guided decision-making.
